  48. About the Author

Arrival in FORT FOG was difficult because the fog was so bad. The travelling caravan (or coach?) what they were in had to stop on the outskirts of town and all the refugees got off and wandered around all lost, blundering, bags of belongings on their backs. There was a terrible moment where the people had a argument over who exactly had won the sweepstake abt how many miles it was from Blackburn to this new place but this ugly incident got forgotten pretty quick when the rain started.

Alphonse and Kelly found their hotel and kipped down for the night but trying to sleep at all was truly like a bad movie full of feel-sick moments. There were cries of agony and ecstasy in the street, the sound of gunshots in a far off garden and at 3am someone burst into their room and threw a biscuit tin full of exploding fireworks onto the bed.

The holiday camp was run by cruel guards whose indifference to suffering was matched only by their insensitivity to joy.

In adversity (see above) the relationship between Kelly and Alphonse prospered again and their sex life was good. They had oral sex, lips swollen with the heat and mouths watering, they had ‘quick and unexpected sex’ © including of ripped clothes and laughter, they had violent and degrading sex in the case of which pain and its opposite were intertwined, they had pseudo-mystical type sex in which the sense of individual was lost to a sense of joint body – sweated, exhausted and lost. Sometimes even, late, late, late at night they had sex in the visionary position – sat apart and opposite on far sides of the room with the light on, staring at each other and masturbating in a mixture of fear, delight, hatred and desire.

The package week in FORT FOG came to an end and Kelly and Alphonse had to pack again and go. Everything seemed to be going OK but then there was some trouble at the airport and in the end it turned out Kelly had the right papers to leave and Alphonse did not.

It was one of those awkward moments that always happen at Customs/Immigration but Kelly knew she had no real choice – indeed it was either abandon Alphonse, get on the plane and live or else stay and face a life of boredom and uncertainty in a foreign hotel.

Kelly kissed A for the last time and got on the plane. As it lifted off from the Embassy roof Alphonse and the others were still clinging to those kind of skiddy bits on the bottom of the helicopter.

Back home Kelly drifted.

She visited her dads grave and spitted on it.

She went into town and came across a march where some people were protesting against the Job Seekers Allowance (JSA). Without really thinking Kelly joined in and later got arrested.
