  48. About the Author

In the twisting turning of the machinery they found many coins in many amounts and denominations, incl the old coins and the new coins and the new new coins, some coins the kids had even no idea what they were. They found also cameras, phones and other electronical stuff, some of it unknown or of mystery entire, as well as letters or papers whose substance were yellowed with age, or growing dark with mildew spots, the words obscured, and also furthermore many other things/items that do not bear full repeating in detail here. Anything that was anything went into the bags and anything that was nothing stayed on the ground – that was the rule but as time went on Broth and Suzette grew more tired and couldn’t really continue with the work. Often they ‘stumbled to rest or curled asleep’ © somewhere in a corner, clutching the walkie talkie as a last notional link to the outside world and blinking to the rhythm of some dreadful pistons, the hair on their sleeping heads stirred by the circular churning of a powerful rotary arm. Valiant for her part by contrast, and with Plaster as companion, ventured deeper and deeper into the spinning and pounding gloom of the mechanism, the hole thing thundering about them as they crawled beneath or clambered over its elements, marvelling at the sheer extent of the Wheel Of Misfortune, trying and with great difficulty failing to comprehend its real purpose or true form above ground in relation to the workings below. It was obvious – even to the 2 of them unqualified as architects or engineers – that it must be much more than a simple wheel – and in their conversations they soon began to imagine an intricate series of structures, wheels, spirals, chambers and tunnels etc all interconnected, that was still but a shadow of what truly lay above them. Time passed in unknown quantities. As they went on – retrieving more and more finds and placing them in the bags provided – their arduous return trips on child labour legs to the entrance was costing them more and more efforts and time and so it was, w/out real discussion or other explicit communication, that after a certain point they simply began to leave clusters of the filled bags they’d finished with at what seemed like intuitive collection points here or there, sparing themselves the hard trek back to daylight and using the time saved instead to work on inside the great mechanism of the Wheel of Misfortune.
