  48. About the Author

Aside from her awe (as outlined previous) at the power and physical extent of the underbelly to the Wheel of Misfortune, Valiant was also confronted by the enormous sound that came from its various half-lit machineries where she and her compatriots had become temporary visitors. As they first edged in there, eyes adjusting to the dark, it was initially just deafening and LOUD and all communication w the other kids had to be done using BSL or ASL or using those wipeable messageboards that the deep sea drivers rely on in the cartoons. THIS WAY she would write on the messageboard and show it blankly to Plaster, Broth and Suzette who would follow along like a troupe of little ducklings on the route she suggested. Each of them carried a large plastic bag and a kind of hand-held ‘picker’ device that supposedly allowed them to grab hold on things at floor level without bending and without making actual contact to probably filthy and insanitary objects, items or specimens that had been on the ground in there a long time. The short height of the persons in question (Valiant, Plaster, Broth and Suzette) however made the picker devices impractical, ther hands/arms already being closer to things on the ground than the length of the pickers, resulting in an awkward process to use them and in the pickers soon being discarded, the kids working quicker and more easily by unprotected hands. The 4 of them worked ‘shifts’ of abt 3 hours, then went back to entrance, emerging into daylight to pass out heavy bags of collected items and rest a while before returning to the din. The work was hard and several times one or another of the child labours took injury from the machinery, getting variously banged, pushed, tripped, hit, shoved, tripped, knocked/knocked over, scraped, shunted, caught, tangled, dragged, burned, spiked, punctured, poked or scratched repeatedly, suffering minor damage to knees, fingers, shins, foreheads, elbows, feet, forearms, heads, noses, backs, ribs, ears, ankles etc certainly enough to make the youngest (Broth and Suzette) cry and activate the sole walkie talkie they were provided with to ask politely that they be taken out of that place henceforth. Of cause no such hasty exit was arranged, and after a short time sitting on some cooling piece of the machinery, the group simply resumed work, carrying on where they had previous left off, and bearing the impact of such injury as might have occurred.
