‘Me too.’ In fact, he was so thrilled he still couldn’t believe it. Out of all the guys in the office—and there were quite a few of them who would be eager to take his place—Neve Chandler had chosen him. And she was fabulous—not tiny and waiflike as Lyssa was, but statuesque, tall and imposing. Her limbs were long and lean and she rather liked showing them off. Even at the office her skirts barely graced her thighs. She had feline features, not the least of which were green, slanting eyes. Her hair was black like a raven’s feathers and, not that he knew much about hairstyles, it was cut in one of those razored affairs favoured by trendy Radio One DJs. The sort of hairdo that made lesser mortals look as if they’d just fallen out of bed. On Neve it was perfect. And she was ferociously rich and well connected, which—if Jake were being honest—he found very attractive too. He wondered if Daddy had any idea that his only daughter also preferred raunchy and rather risky sex.

‘The food will be getting cold,’ Neve said as she spooned some fried rice out of the metal containers.

Jake’s mobile phone rang and he pulled it from his pocket. ‘Damn.’ He glanced at the display in dismay. ‘It’s Lyssa.’

‘Ignore it,’ Neve instructed.

‘Yeah,’ he said, though it was harder to do than he’d imagined. Perhaps it was guilt brought on by the opulence of his surroundings and the fact he was sitting here with a beautiful woman who Lyssa knew nothing about, toasting his rather hasty departure with a decent-vintage champagne. His phone continued to ring before the voicemail kicked in.

Neve clinked her glass against his once more. Her eyes fixed on his. ‘You’re here with me now, darling,’ she said.

He smiled, but he could feel an uneasy tightness at the corners of his mouth. Being here was going to take rather more adjusting to than he’d previously envisaged.

What a fucking stupid idea that was. Truly fucking stupid. I look at the sodden kitchen floor. It’s definitely an insurance job. There’s water dripping from the light fitting and I daren’t turn on the electricity or I might blow up the whole damn place. I hold my hands to my eyes and try to block out the damage. Jeepers—what was I thinking of? Jake—that’s what. In the cold light of day it seems like an extraordinarily daft thing to do.
