So instead of going out with Shane, I’m at Pizza My Heart sharing a Figgy Piggy pizza (bacon, figs, sage, and feta—it’s an acquired taste but once you’ve acquired it, it’s addictive) with Emily and Owen after work, talking about Emily’s burgeoning love life.
“It was the flower magic, Ceej.”
“It was most definitely not.”
“Coulda been, though,” says Owen.
“I’ve been wearing the locket every day, and I’m telling you, I am so much more confident and funny with it on. You have to make me another one for Golfland.” She gasps. “You should make them for everyone! Like a business, like on Etsy.”
“I dunno. Do you think people would buy that stuff?”
“I’m buying it, aren’t I?”
“You’re my friend. And you’re desperate.” Em throws a fig at me and I add, “Okay, sorry, that wasn’t nice.”
“Brynn sells her photography through Etsy,” says Em. “I could, you know, I could text her about it and see if she could give you some advice.”
I don’t know whether I’m more shocked that Brynn has an Etsy business (is there anything that girl doesn’t do?) or that Em has Brynn’s number. I look at her. She blushes and says, “She gave me her number at the mixer.”
I give her a hard stare. “Really?”
Em shrugs. “It’s nothing.”
I can sense Owen watching our exchange with interest, but he remains silent, thank goodness. I may have told him a little more than was advisable at the mixer—okay, I told him everything—about how little patience I have for Brynn.
Well, whatever; Em’s been giddy with excitement about Fiona, so maybe the Brynn thing really is Brynn-initiated nothingness. Anyway, Emily and Owen are all fired up about the Etsy-style flower-magic business venture, and the more we talk, the more I feel like maybe they’re right. Maybe this could be my thing. “I could do custom bouquets for Valentine’s Day, or do lucky flowers for promposals, or prom, even,” I say. “I could have my own, like, student line of flower magic.”
“Look who believes,” says Em, patting my shoulder.
“If it’ll make money, I’ll believe in it,” I say. And then I wish I hadn’t, because I’m thinking about making money for myself, not for Heart’s Desire. Not that it would be nearly enough to make a difference, let alone save the store, but still. Saving Heart’s Desire should be my first priority.
“You should make a flower-magic locket for yourself and go talk to Shane at lunch someday,” says Em, which stops me for a second. All she ever talks about is how I should go out with Owen.
“Ha ha, right. I think not.”
