  48. About the Author

Martha was heartbroken and subsequential (?) months passed slowly. Smoke (from the bombs mentioned already) was any where and ever where in the town and therefore life was hard to see properly, the streets thick and tangled, the building submerged like C19th and industry.

In the fraught empty bed of her grieving (more her mum, two of her sisters, her vanished daughter and exiting lover than death of her largely useless ex-husband) M descended further each minute of each hour. Nite tremors. Heart sink as like a generalised direction of travel.

Daytime for her was a job whereby she had to lay a kind of horrible poisonous paste around town using her bare hands, working for the Pest Control people appointed by the council, spreading it (poisonous paste) on the kerbs and into the grime of piss-stained corners and up walls of alleyways and then (later) home cooking tasty/economical meals for her still surviving kids in the sadly depleted household of her life.

Night for M meanwhile was the colour black. The sound of rain and slurred uneasy voices. Cars driving too fast. Trash tangled in overgrown spaces that used to be gardens. Warm air from basement pumped thru the grease encrusted on ventilator grilles. Street washed in thick waves of Kremlin brand © aftershave. Moths in halogens of roadmenders. Raves in warehouse under railway arches. Objects in nightmare arrangements. A violent scrabble of letters that could not anyhow be used to make words.

Sometimes dead of nite Martha she thought she felt a kind of presence of her daughter –ghost Gina or spirit maybe –‘up there’ somewhere / online or something, at least as she liked to describe it. Symptoms/delusions:

– a shiver sensation she had when a page loaded badly

– glitched advertisement

– faint tune or singing from invisible browser tab left open

– 404 Not Found
