I was upset with her for lying, but at the same time, my heart broke for her. I was always the rational one, but after putting the pieces together, I lost all control. It was all too much. The lack of communication had me confused and hurt, and if I talked to her now, I’d say things I would surely regret tomorrow.
I sighed and unclenched my fist. It was freezing out, and she didn’t have enough clothes on. One glance at her bare feet on the snowy driveway, and the red in her eyes tore me up.
“Look. I don’t want to make any mistakes while I’m upset like this, alright? I’m frustrated and confused.” I puffed out a breath and ran my hands through my hair. “But you need to know that you didn’t deserve what they did to you. I’m just gonna go, and we’ll talk tomorrow, okay? I’m not mad at you, I’m just mad in general.” My voice rasped with rage, and it probably would until I beat something to a pulp. Olive opened her mouth then shut it. Tears stained her cheeks, and instinctively, I lifted my hand to wipe them away, but paused midair. “I just need to process this, alright?” She nodded and took a few steps back.
So, I got in my car and pulled out of the driveway that belonged to a family I didn’t know anymore.
36. Thirty-Six
My chest felt tight, and my throat ached from holding back sobs. Guilt ran in my veins, and when I turned back in the house, I forced myself to hold it together. I bypassed the kitchen, where I knew my family had gathered, and went straight to my room.
I slammed the door shut and fell face first onto the bed. I quieted my sobs by hugging a pillow to my face, my tears soaking the fabric.
It was all too much. Everything happened before I was ready. I knew coming here was a bad idea.
Flying here. Meeting Finn. Seeing Sarah and Logan together with rings on their fingers.
I wasn’t strong enough to handle it.
The hardest part was I wasn’t necessarily upset by the fact that they were together. What upset me was that neither of them tried to talk to me about it. Okay, and I was upset about walking in on them while he was still mine for sure. But the thing was, Logan and I were friends first, and if he or Sarah had spoken up about it, I would have gladly stepped aside. Because I had loved them both dearly.
Someone knocked lightly on the door, and I mumbled an incoherent, “Go away.”
Whoever was there ignored me and opened it anyway. The bed dipped by my feet, and I didn’t bother looking up.
“Olive,” a deep voice said, one I instantly recognized as Logan’s.
