“So, where are you staying?” I questioned, hoping to have a conversation with her before our separate departures.

She must have taken my question the wrong way because she cut me a sideways glance like I was some nosy pervert.

“Why would I tell you that?”

“So, I can meet my fake future in-laws, of course.” She pinched the bridge of her nose and shook her head.

“You will never be meeting my family.” I was the best with parents actually; usually when I broke up with a girl, her parents were as upset as she was.

“Ahh, you say that but who will save you from the nagging of making up an imaginary boyfriend and also give you the best vacation of your life?”

Olive rolled her eyes and crossed her arms. “I can handle all of it just fine.” Her voice wavered like she didn’t believe what was coming out of her. What she didn’t know is that I don’t let up easily.

After a moment of silence, she continued. “But…if I were to agree to this, what would the catch be?” She was considering it, I could tell. I didn’t know a thing about her family, but it must have been pretty bad for her to consider pretending with me.

Questioning the willful blonde beside me, I said, “Does there have to be a catch?”

“In my experience, there’s always a catch.”

Interesting. The more I learned about Olive, the more curious I became about her.

“Well, maybe just this once there isn’t one.” She scoffed a laugh at my response, as if she could never imagine such a possibility.

“Right. Well, either way, it doesn’t matter.” She turned her head to the window and scooted away from me.

This girl…she has no idea what’s about to hit her.

Between the peanuts and a granola bar that Finn had, I mostly sobered up during the time that it took for us to land. I wasn’t sure what possessed the not-so-stranger, Finn, to be so adamant about helping me but I was weary.

As we landed and waited for the all-clear to get up and grab our carry-ons, I turned my phone off airplane mode. When I did so, my screen was overwhelmed with messages. Among the notifications from work, emails, and social media, my most recent texts stood out to me the most.

Matt: Excited to see you, don’t think too much.

Mom: Call me when you land! So excited to meet your man friend. Love you!!

Dad: See you soon kiddo, we ALL are ready to have you.
