I loved talking about my job, and I couldn’t help but grin. “I’m a children’s ski instructor down at the resort off Mountain Street.”

She perked up. “Oh, how fun! We love that resort, but haven’t been there in years.”

An idea popped in my mind and instantly shot from my mouth. “If you’d like, I can take you guys up there. It’s free for me of course. I could teach you to ski.” I turned to Olive and if looks could kill…I would be a puddle on the floor. She was trying her hardest to shoot me with laser beams or to use her telekinetic powers to throw me out of the restaurant windows.

Matt spoke up next to Olive. “That actually sounds like fun. Taylor’s never been skiing, and Olive hasn’t done it since we were kids.”

I decided to push a little further. “You guys should come tomorrow. Tuesdays are the slowest and I don’t think I have any classes in the morning.”

A sudden jolt of pain shot up my leg, and I groaned.

“Oh, I’m sorry, babe. Did I kick you?”

“It’s fine.” I croaked out.

Two could play that game.

You know what’s worse than an awkward first date? A first date that’s fake. Oh, and your entire family is there.

Admittedly, my family was falling more for Finn by the second. He complimented my mother’s necklace, talked hockey with my dad, told Matt about his future business plans, and still managed to find time to flirt with me in between. The guy had to have a play-by-play manual on fake dating. Or maybe he had someone in his ear whispering which move to pull out next. Either way, Finn knew exactly what he was doing. And it infuriated me.

What was his game? What did he get out of this? There’s always a reason. I’m not naive; people are selfish, and they’ll take what they want and leave you in the dust. But Finn was over here, wooing my entire family into him being their boyfriends, and I was losing more control by the minute. However, although I’d never admit it to him, Finn was somewhat…helpful tonight. The last time I saw Sarah had undoubtedly been an utter disaster, and I had been dreading this eventual meet-up ever since. But Finn distracted me from all the anxiety by forcing me to focus on him. It worked better than I expected. But it still didn’t mean he was right to just show up here tonight, uninvited.
