The black glass mirrored me, showing a coward and a liar in the reflection. The face of a girl I no longer knew. I couldn’t let anyone know how unbearable I was right then. I needed to be calm, neutral.
“So…what have you been up to?” Sarah asked from the next seat over. I couldn’t even look up from my small device. I began doing my square breaths: in for four, out for four. Oh gosh. I can't do this. I've got to leave.
My cheeks burned red hot, and I put my phone down and placed my hands on the table to prepare myself to leave.
As I was about to stand, a familiar voice echoed through our section of the restaurant.
“Hey, babe!”
I turned sharply in my seat to see none other than Finn walking toward me.
It was official: I was living a nightmare.
He was gorgeous, with navy suit pants and a white button down. His brown hair was more tamed than it had been on the plane. He seemed well-rested, and until that moment, I had no idea how handsome he truly was. On the flight, he was tired and wore sweats and a T-shirt, but when he was put together and cleaned up—he was downright delicious. Everyone in the restaurant seemed to turn to him.
Finn made his way to my side of the table, put both of his strong hands on my shoulders, and leaned down to kiss my cheek. His full lips smacked against my round cheek, and I hadn’t moved an inch. My face had to be the same shade of red as my dad’s tie.
What did he think he was doing here?

Olive was pissed. I could tell. But, in her drunken state on the plane, she told me about their plans for dinner tonight, and it was too tempting not to show up. She was dressed in a tight black dress, and I was having a hard time keeping my eyes to myself. On the plane, I couldn’t see an outline of her body because she kept layering up more and more. But now she was on display in front of me, and my tongue felt numb.
“What are you doing here…honey bunches…” Oh Lord, how long has it been since this girl’s dated? She looked up at me and we held a conversation with our eyes.
What are you doing here?
Hush and act normal.
I could tell she wanted to roll her eyes but stopped herself, refusing to make a scene in front of her family.
“Sorry I’m running a bit late. Work was crazy and then my mom was on the phone with me talking my ear off. She says hi by the way.” A lie, really. But possibly a believable one?
