“Don’t look at them. Don’t look at her. Look at me.” I raised a tightly closed fist. “If you so much as breathe in Olive’s direction, it will be your last.”
Logan flinched, and his eyes widened further, looking like a deer in headlights.
“Finn. Please, can we go?” Olive asked, voice unsteady as she stepped up next to me. Her tiny, shaking hand reached up to my shoulder.
I didn’t respond. Truthfully, I didn’t know how to speak to her when I was so filled with anger.
Without tearing my gaze from Logan’s I said, “This isn’t over. And you’ll regret the day you ever come near her again.”
I dropped both my hands, and he opened his mouth to reply, but nothing came out. I turned to walk to the front door, and the rest of her family stared at me.
An hour ago I considered each of them to be good friends, to be people that loved my Olive. But now it felt like a room full of liars.
Without speaking to any of them in particular, I said to the room, “How any of you can stand to be in the room with those two together is beyond me. She deserves more than you all.” I got to the front door and put my boots on without tying the laces as I headed into the snowy driveway.
I could hear Olive’s small steps behind me. “Finn. Please, can we talk for just a second?”
I shook my head. I was so exasperated, and this knot-like ball of rage inside of me would make me say things to her that I may not mean.
“I’m so sorry, Finn. I just couldn’t—“
“Couldn’t what?” I snapped. “Couldn’t find the time in the last twelve days to say, oh hey, by the way my ex cheated on me with my sister and now they’re married? Everyone knew but me, Olive. I thought we were closer than that. You lied to me, you said he had moved.” Hurt ran through me, mixing with my anger. After every intimate moment we’d shared, I was gutted that she hadn’t told me. Was I not worth that conversation?
“I know I lied, and I’m so sorry. I just…I didn’t want you to think less of me.” Her voice cracked, the combination of it and her sniffles hitting me in the chest. “I was scared to tell you. We were having such a nice time, and I thought if I didn’t tell you, it would be easier when I had to leave.” Each word she spoke was woven with regret and sorrow.
