“Maybe your sister shouldn’t come, Sarah.”
Every backhanded compliment rushed to me, and I fought to keep my dinner in my stomach. Without thinking or hearing any more of the useless words that left either of their mouths, I grabbed my keys and sprinted to the front door.
I didn’t care that I was in pajama shorts and a sweatshirt. I was getting out of here. Both shouted my name at my back, but I had nothing left for them. I ran out to my freezing cold car, already too numb to be cold. Adrenaline and rage would keep me warm.
I shifted into reverse, barely able to see due to the stacked up ice and snow. I pulled out of the driveway faster than I could think, clipping something and realizing I knocked down the mailbox in the process. I was too shocked to care. As I left, I saw them both come out onto the front porch in my rearview.
And I drove, leaving my heart right where it belonged—in Aspen.
And I vowed I would never allow myself to be hurt like that again.
35. Thirty-Five
An anger burned through my veins like I had never known.
All those moments where Olive was insecure, or when she was anxious to see Sarah. Why she was so upset on the plane. Why she left dinner in a hurry after being alone with Sarah.
I was still in shock, and it took every bit of my control not to haul Logan out of here and slam his face into the snow.
Everything finally clicked, every piece of Olive that made no sense. The pictures of her when she was younger, why she felt the need to drop so much weight, why she constantly felt less-than, why she always checked to make sure her makeup was just right.
It was all because this douchebag in front of me, who I’d considered a friend, broke her heart.
When no one answered me, I repeated myself. “It. Was. You.”
“W-What?” Logan stuttered. “What was me?”
I scoffed at his feigned ignorance and turned to Olive. Tears threatened to spill down her cheeks, and I knew from her face that this bastard was the one guilty of breaking her heart.
I reached over and grabbed a handful of Logan’s t-shirt.
“What are you talking about?” He asked, as if he had no clue what he’d done to the woman I loved most.
“You were the one that cheated on Olive.”
His eyes widened, and Olive said, “Finn, don’t—”
Logan looked from me to her, his eyes asking for help. When she didn’t push further, he looked at the other members of her family around me, clearly wanting someone to pull him out of my grip. None of them moved.
