But I enjoyed dinner and dessert with all the ones I loved. When Logan and I first started dating I wasn’t sure we would be the best fit as my boyfriend. After all, we were friends first. But seeing him in my childhood home and getting along so well with my favorite people made my heart warm. I knew I made the right choice. He and Sarah laughed together, and I couldn’t help but smile. My two favorite people were at this table, getting along, and I felt like everything was right at that moment.

***

The entire day was amazing. We ate till our stomachs pushed against the buttons of our pants, and I laughed, telling Logan different family stories throughout dinner. We watched Christmas movies and drank hot chocolate. It was the kind of day I’d always hoped for as a little girl, having a hot boyfriend at Christmas with my family and everyone talking and laughing. I couldn’t stop thinking of how perfect it all was. Even though Logan was shy the whole time, he never left my side.

That night, I was shaken from my dreams by the sound of a loud bang from down the hall. I looked beside me and saw Logan was gone. I checked the time, noting it was one thirty, and figured he probably tried to go get his usual midnight glass of water and bumped into something.

I got up from my blankets and sheets to help him, but when I tip-toed down the hallway, I heard grunting. I walked farther and leaned against the wall.

“Logan,” a woman moaned, the voice one I knew very well.

No. I let out a silent laugh. They would never—

“Yes, Sarah. Just like that.”

My worst nightmare was confirmed with Logan’s words. I turned the corner and saw my own sister perched on the island countertop, her legs wrapped around the waist of the man I loved. Sarah’s nightgown was bunched around her stomach, and I didn’t have to look close to see Logan’s pants were pulled down just enough. In the dark room, the twinkling Christmas lights lit enough for me to make out the movements of his hips thrusting.

Acid filled my throat.

I paused in shock.

My boyfriend and my sister.

The two people I cared for most.

“What?” I said the question out loud. I barely whispered it, but it was enough for them to look at me. Sarah gasped, her eyes filling with shock and sorrow, surely matching the expression on my own face. Logan adjusted himself back into place and pulled up his pants.

“Olive, I am so sor—” I didn’t look at them anymore. I couldn’t.

I couldn’t breathe. My whole world crumpled in the matter of a minute. Every insecurity I had ran through my head.

“Sarah was always the pretty sister.”

“Olive was always best at…other things.”
