Jesse had always been a sensible accountant-type at heart. I persuaded him away from that path years ago when we boarded the ships because he would have done anything for me, but at his core, that’s who he was. He never got over that one throwaway comment his mum made about why he wasn’t watching me when I was taken. Since then, he’s been trying to make up for ‘letting me down’. He did let me down, badly, but not in the way he thinks. He should have told me what Karen and her husband did when he found out. I could never, ever forgive him for not doing that.
Once I was ready, I made Jesse and me a fabulous dinner in the little flat we were living in above the bar on St Tibuda and crushed some pills into his food – enough that I knew they’d definitely do the job. I’d already written his suicide note, in which he confessed to killing both Rick and Stuart to protect his sister from their lecherous ways. He also expressed a wish that the rest of his money came to Daniela. I’ve no idea yet if it’ll be accepted as legally binding. Doesn’t really matter though – I made sure that most of the money is in the bar, which is in our joint names. I’ll be fine. We only had the bar for a short time, but we had great fun doing it up – it was like playing with a giant dolls’ house, like the one Dad made for me when I was small.
Jesse was the last person left who was to blame for what happened. Once Karen told me about the crash, and that Jesse knew about it, I realized what I needed to do. They all played their part, the whole family. I needed to take my revenge on all of them. Not just Rick – I was already planning for that, by then, taking my time, and setting things up.
I went online and tracked down my biological father, Michael. It took a while, but given that he spent half his time online entering competitions from his public Facebook page, in the end it wasn’t too hard. While there were no photos of him on display in the house, I managed to find some in the loft when Jesse and I cleared out the house before it was sold, so I knew what he looked like and could be pretty sure I had the right person.
