Thanks as always to Alex for your constant support and doing everything while I get on with the writing, and to Toby and Livi for having grown up into amazing people who make me proud every day.

And thank you to all the readers who have been so supportive of the books so far! I love reading your messages and seeing your pictures on Insta and read and appreciate literally all my reviews.

Finally – a quick word on cruising. This novel was in part inspired by images of the cruise ships laid up off the coast of the UK during Covid, and I’m delighted to see the cruise industry now picking up again. While it is true that occasionally people do go missing from cruise ships, the vast majority of the millions of passengers who cruise each year are delighted with their trips. I hate these kind of people. They come out here on holiday once a year with their brand shiny new Salomon this and K2 that and think they know it all. They’re so annoying. They know nothing compared to me.

‘So we want some virgin tracks today. Back country. Somewhere no one else goes. Somewhere a bit challenging. Know what I mean?’ says one, his accent plummy and entitled.
