The image of my one night with Lola flashes into my mind and I push it away. ‘So who do you reckon killed him then?’ I continue, wanting to move the subject away from who has had sex with whom. That night with Lola was certainly a night to remember, but it was hardly my finest hour.
Alice sighs. ‘I don’t know, Stuart. I doubt anyone does. Except the killer.’ She pauses. ‘Is that what you’re actually asking? Whether I killed Rick in a fit of jealous rage because he was my secret boyfriend rather than simply my good friend, or …’ – she picks up a pillow and presses it over my face – ‘as part of some kind of kinky game?’
I laugh and try to push the pillow off, but she doesn’t let it budge. As she holds the pillow over my face and I feel her straddle me again, I have to admit, it is kind of hot. She grinds against me and presses the pillow against me a little harder, and for a second it flits through my mind that maybe she did this to Rick too but then I am inside her again and I’m not thinking about anything at all.

‘I just went for a walk, Dad,’ I said as calmly as I could manage. ‘I couldn’t sleep.’
Dad’s face was puce and he was kind of opening and closing his hands at his sides. For a second I wondered if he was going to hit me. But he’d never done anything like that. Why would he do it this time?
Because I’d never done anything as bad as this.
‘I was FRANTIC!’ he yelled. ‘You’ve been gone at least two hours. Maybe even longer for all I know. WHERE WERE YOU?!?!’
‘I went for a walk!’ I shouted back, picking up the duvet and wrapping it round me, suddenly aware that I was almost naked and not wanting to be in front of my dad. Stick to your story, I told myself. He doesn’t know. He can’t prove otherwise. ‘I can’t be stuck in my room all the time! I felt like some fresh air! It’s not a crime, is it?’
‘DO YOU THINK I WAS BORN YESTERDAY?!?’ His right hand flew up and I flinched, but he didn’t touch me, instead he ran it through his hair and started pacing the room. ‘Why on earth would you go for a walk in the middle of the night? In the dark? It doesn’t make any sense.’
