Saint Tibuda is beautiful and exactly what I wanted: a sparsely populated, not too big and not too small island and with only a few tourists who are more at the backpacker end of the scale than high-rollers. It’s not on the cruise-ship circuit and not the kind of place that is ever likely to be, so the chances of me bumping into anyone I’ve ever worked with are minimal.
And even if I did, they probably wouldn’t recognize me. New life, new look. I’ve reinvented myself before – I can do it again. I’ve grown my hair, dyed it back to blond and braided it. My boobs have gone up another cup size for no reason other than because I fancied it, and I’ve even had a bum lift – years of dancing has made me boyish and muscular, and I wanted my curves back. Now that I’m out in the sun all day, I’m more tanned and I don’t wear much make-up like I did when I was on the ships. Finally, perhaps for the first time in my life, I am doing something just for myself. Living the way I want to.
My life insurance came through for Jesse about three months after we left the ship. He also inherited the few pounds I’d had from the sale of Karen’s house once the church had taken the lion’s share, according to her wishes, no doubt trying to buy her way in to heaven after lying about being involved in that crash. I’d already spent most of the money I had left from Dad on cosmetic procedures – obviously I knew I was going to ‘die’ and as everyone says, you can’t take it with you. Better to spend it first.
I kept a bit of money aside to keep me going while I established my new identity, but I needed a new cash injection from somewhere pretty quickly, so it was important the life insurance thing worked out. Apparently, most people of my age don’t bother with a will or with insurance – weird, when you think about it. You never know what’s round the corner, after all, do you? I mean, look at my life so far. Being abducted – no one could have predicted that. Falling off a ship – no one could have predicted that either. And then coming back as someone else – well, hopefully no one will ever get wind of that. I can’t see any reason why they would.
