“I didn’t know. Not at all. I gambled like you wouldn’t believe. I got lucky that you couldn’t remember what Chloe had told you, and that she hadn’t told anyone else. Except perhaps in the journal you so skillfully pilfered. I was prepared to lose everything then—and then again when you came back to school after the accident. That’s why I was out that day, the day you came by the office. I was avoiding what I believed was about to land on me. And looking for another job. A safe harbor to jump to. But the call never came. Your memory remained a black hole. And no one knew what I had done to drive Chloe to that point.”

“That’s why you kept asking me whether my memory was coming back,” I say. “You were worried I’d remember what Chloe told me and then the whole world would know.”

He doesn’t deny it.

“How could you do that to her?” I ask. “Treat her that way. Put that pressure on her. Try to... She was so unhappy that last month. She must have felt so alone. And hurt and scared.”

“That wasn’t my intent.”

“And me? You did that when you knew I loved her so much. You didn’t care about either one of us.”

“That’s not true.” Ron raises his index finger in the air. He sounds more passionate, more emotional than at any time during our conversation. “You can’t say that. I did care.”

“You used us all. Especially Chloe. Like she was a toy.”

“I cared. I still do.” He shifts in his seat, turning to face me. “You say I don’t care, but you’ve never figured out who took you to the hospital that night, have you? It was me. I brought you there and made sure you were looked after.” He turns away and stares out the windshield at the slowly filling lot. “I found you, and I brought you there. Don’t forget that. Don’t ever forget it.”

Seventy-Four

The small space of the car is confining. I want to smash my fist through the window.

Instead, I slam it against the dashboard, which feels totally unsatisfying. And stingingly painful.

“You took me to the hospital? After you ran us off the road? What did you do to Chloe? Where is she, and why did you only help me if you wanted her so much?”

“I didn’t run you off the road. And I don’t know where Chloe is. But I did follow you that night. That’s true. I believe that is my car behind you in Daniel’s movie.”

“Did you kill him? Daniel?”

“What? God, no.”

“Why did you lie to me about knowing him? His mom said you were helping him.”
