I shake my head and shove open the door, dialing Haley.

Seventy-Five

Over subs from Ray’s that night, Olivia tells us what it was like to be inside the school when the police pulled up to talk to Ron. Olivia is eating her usual vegetarian on multi-grain bread while she shares the details.

“Oh my God, it was like a movie or something,” she says. “We were all watching out the window during first period. We saw the police cars fly up and then Detective Haley was questioning Mr. Hartman like he was a criminal. Of course, the teachers kept telling us to ignore it, but we couldn’t—and the teachers were all watching, too. I mean, seeing a faculty member get arrested right in the parking lot.”

“He didn’t get arrested,” Dad says, ever the voice of reason. “They’re just questioning him. And he’s told the police everything he told Hunter. At least that’s what Detective Haley relayed to me. I don’t think they know yet if they have enough evidence to arrest him.”

“What about the other stuff?” Olivia asks. “The really shitty stuff?”

“I doubt he’ll be arrested for that,” Dad says, calmly eating his tuna sub.

Olivia’s face contorts with outrage. “Why not? I don’t care if he didn’t touch Chloe. Are you saying he can just come on to a student like a gigantic, sweating creep and then totally skate?”

“He’s not skating,” Dad says. He looks at me, gauging how I’m responding to the conversation about Ron. I shrug, so Dad goes on. “He didn’t break the law by sexually harassing Chloe. And the police are still going to investigate him regarding Chloe’s disappearance. Of course they’re going to look into him for that.”

Olivia starts to argue, but Dad holds up his hand and she stops.

“He’s in a lot of trouble at school, Livvy. They sent an email to all the parents this afternoon. He’s been suspended and will probably be fired. Apparently, he’s been fired for this kind of thing before.”

“Oh, gross,” Olivia says. “That’s just…” She puts her sandwich down. “I might vom.”

“And the school hired him anyway?” I ask, even though it’s clear they did.
