“I was. He must have told the police we saw each other out there that night. When I was questioned, the police showed a great deal of interest in my movements in the parking lot and where my car was. I lied and told them I wasn’t parked in my usual spot.”
“But only someone who didn’t want the movie to come out would kill Daniel.”
“I don’t give a damn about the movie, and I didn’t kill him. I wouldn’t kill anyone. Look, I kept expecting the police to show up at my door. Either because they found the journal or because Chloe had told someone. Or because some security footage showed my car following you out of the lot. Hunter, if I really had something to be afraid of, some deadly legal jeopardy, would I still be here? Living and teaching in Bentley? No, I’d be long gone already. I planned to leave at the semester break because I feared all of this would come out eventually. But I didn’t break the law.”
“I’m going to call the police and let them decide. But I can’t even sit in this car anymore.” I fumble for the door handle. “I can’t believe you did this. You let us down.”
Ron reaches out and places his hand on my left arm. “Wait.”
“Fuck off.”
“Just wait, Hunter.” He uses his authoritarian voice, the one he breaks out in class when everyone is acting up. I have to admit, it’s effective. It freezes me in my seat even now. “You can call the police if you want. I’ll tell them everything. But I want you to hear this from me first, so it’s not misrepresented. Just take a few minutes and listen.”
I find the door handle and grip it. But I don’t pull.
I wait.
“It’s true. I started out after you. The two of you got into a car and left. And I jumped in my car and followed you. I thought Daniel was gone. He’d turned around and left after you drove off, but he must have come back and started filming again. That’s why there is a car pursuing you out of this lot. I followed you down the road a couple of miles, heading toward Flatwater. I thought that if I could get to both of you and talk to you, I could contain the fallout. I could explain myself to both of you. But I never got the chance.”
“Why? What happened?”
