“It wasn’t her fault,” I say.
“Not because it was her fault. But a creep like that harasses a woman to make them feel small. It’s a power trip. And then she wants to handle it on her own to prove she isn’t small, and then it gets to be too much for her, and she nearly cracks. That’s why she waited so long to tell you. That’s probably why sex felt weird, right?”
“Yeah,” I say, staring hard at my sister. “That would make sense if she was being harassed.”
Dad looks concerned. Really concerned. “Is someone harassing you, Livvy?”
“I’ve told you that people have said shit about me and Gabby. That’s them trying to make us feel small. I haven’t told Gabby about every comment. And she’s probably kept stuff from me. We don’t want to bring the other person down.” Livvy takes a big, deep breath. “I hope Chloe knows she’s not small. She’s a fucking giant.”
I squeeze Livvy’s hand. “Thanks.”
Then Dad reaches out and puts his hand near mine without actually touching me. “Ron Hartman has done one thing that is very helpful for you. The story he’s telling confirms your version of events and the piece of your memory that came back. There was another car. And it’s pretty likely that car caused the accident, not you.”
“Yeah, but you heard what Haley said. How do we know Ron didn’t read what I said about the other car in the media and just repeat it? Wouldn’t that be the perfect way to get yourself off the hook?”
Dad is trying to be optimistic, trying to act like a big part of the mystery has been resolved.
It’s just a wish.
It feels to me like we’re right back at the beginning:
Who was driving that other car?
Why did they run us off the road?
Where’s Chloe?
Seventy-Six
An hour later, Dad shows up at my bedroom door.
He always acts like he’s invading my space and needs special permission to be here.
He sits down at my desk.
“Is something wrong?” I ask.
“Yes, it is.”
My body tenses. “What is it?”
“I’m disappointed in myself,” he says. “Here you’re faced with this big problem, and everybody in town is thinking about it and trying to figure it out. I’m your father, and I’m supposed to be smart, but I don’t have any answers for you. I feel like I’ve let you down.”
“I don’t expect you to solve everything,” I say. “You’re not a cop. And you’re working…”
