Everyone already thinks I did something to Chloe. And Daniel.

And I’m not even sure myself.

I start for the back door, moving slowly. Maybe it’s the cops. Maybe it’s someone selling magazines.

Maybe Dad forgot something. But that’s ridiculous. The next time he forgets something will be the first. Besides, he wouldn’t knock—he’d use his key.

I move cautiously, still in my T-shirt and boxers, and try to catch a glimpse of the door from the hallway without revealing myself. I peek around the corner just as they knock again.

And say my name.

“Hunter? Open up.”

I lower the knife, and then unlock and open the door for Chad and Hannah. The cool morning air rushes in and prickles the skin on my legs. When Chad sees the knife, he takes a step back.

“Whoa, chill,” he says. “Remember us?”

“Yeah,” I say. “And I’m really glad it’s just you.”

Twenty-Nine

The knife goes back into the block, and the three of us settle around the kitchen table.

The three of us. We’ve hung out before, plenty of times. But, like I said, it’s always a little weird. Or maybe it’s just me. Maybe I think about it, and no one else does anymore. Chad never cares what anyone thinks.

Looking back, it all seems so silly that I cared about a three-month relationship with Hannah ending.

The summer after we broke up, Hannah and Chad started dating and have been together ever since. It bothered me at first—why did I have to keep spending time with her after we broke up? Chad, as always, acted like it was nothing unusual and never mentioned it. Not to me, not to anyone. Hector asked him about it once, and Chad just shrugged as if to say, What’s the big deal?

Maybe Hannah likes soccer players.

When I started dating Chloe, I mostly forgot about it. But Chloe occasionally made a snarky comment about Hannah and me. Chloe never really liked Hannah. I always assumed it was because we’d once dated, although Chloe had a couple of other boyfriends before me, including Basher, and I never talked shit about them. But Chloe told me once that she didn’t like Hannah because she couldn’t be trusted—and cheating on me when we were fifteen was Exhibit A.

“I’m glad to see you,” I say again. “But aren’t you going to be late?”

Chad shrugs. “It’s fine. That new secretary, Elisa, she likes me. She’s a soccer fan. She always writes me late slips. No questions asked.”

“You know what’s going on, right?” I ask, looking from Chad to Hannah and back again.
