“But that’s a big lead,” I say. “Find that car, and you’ve got the person who ran us off the road.”

Haley shakes his head. “We don’t even know if that vehicle was at the scene of the accident.”

He looks so certain. Almost smug.

That quick glimpse of the accident jumps back into my mind.

The headlights. The tree.

“Let me tell you what I remembered,” I say.

Forty-Four

“I went out there this morning. To the scene of the accident,” I say. “I hadn’t been out there since that night.”

“Why did you go to the crime scene?” Haley asks.

“To see it. I wanted to try to jar something loose in my mind. And it worked.”

“Is this what you were telling me when you came home?” Dad asks.

“Yes.”

Haley’s brow is wrinkled. “How did you feel when you went there? Was it…exciting to you in some way? Did you get an adrenaline rush?”

“Detective,” Dad says, “I don’t think you—”

“Just hold it,” I say to Haley. “Please. Just hold on and listen for once.”

I detail the slow drive to the scene, the deer that scattered. Then parking and approaching the tree, that brief piece of memory that raced back into my brain like a flash flood.

“Something happened that night,” I say. “Something came at the car from the left side.” They’re both focused on me, and I feel like a fortune-teller who suddenly starts speaking in tongues, communicating with the other world in order to solve a mystery. Except what I’m describing comes from my own memory. And I’m right here in this world. “It had to be another car. Why else would we go off the road and hit that tree?” I stare right into Haley’s eyes. “You’ve thought all along it was possible there was another car, one that ran us off the road. Well, now you have the video showing the car following us and now you have what I remember.”

Haley reaches into his pants pocket, brings out his little notebook and a pen that he clicks open with his thumb. He scribbles some things in the book but takes his time speaking.

I push him. “What do you think? Isn’t this something?”

He presses his lips together and leans back in his chair. His eyes look wary, cautious. But also curious. He must see the possibilities here.

He has to.
