- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
A few days later, I make it a point to run into Adam Warner. I learned his routine and his wife’s in about two minutes on Facebook and by sitting out in my car two doors down from their house. Sophie left first. It made my stomach roil to see her. She was very pretty. I could see how Connor would like her. She was younger too. Probably more fun than me. I didn’t even want to go there, but I couldn’t help myself. I wondered what the two of them said about me. How they must have laughed at my inability to become pregnant. How it came so easily and accidentally to them when I put so much effort into it.
That wasn’t what made me sick when I watched Sophie. It was seeing her and that little girl—a girl that I felt was half mine. Or should be half mine. It was my husband that made that baby! Aubrey was perfect. She was the little girl that I dreamed about when I went to sleep in tears after having Dr. Y or some stupid girl at the herbal store tell me that I was not going to get pregnant.
That I should just give up and adopt!
Idiot.
Twenty minutes later, Adam backed his car out of the driveway. I followed him half a block, and then I started honking and waving frantically. He pulled over and got out, thinking that there’d been an accident.
“What do you want?” he asked, recognizing me right away.
“The same thing you do,” I said.
He pretended to push back, but I’m persuasive. That’s what I do.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Yes, I know you do,” I said. “I want you to meet me in the bar at the Four Seasons at seven.”
“I won’t meet you anywhere,” he said.
“We have the same interests here, Adam. Our spouses betrayed us, and your marriage is going to end. You know it. And you’ll be stuck paying child support for a kid that’s not yours. You’ll hate every minute of your life for the next fifteen years. Aubrey will be a reminder of how Sophie betrayed you. A knife in your back. You know it. I know it. I have a solution. Meet me there.”
He looked at me like he’d been hit with an air gun. Just flat-out stunned. I had no idea if he’d come or not.
He did, of course.
God, men are so easy.
I see the detective’s crappy car in front of Adam’s house and park behind it. I remove the gun from my glove box and go to the door. Connor bought it for me after our neighbor was assaulted.
Connor had his good points.
All right. One good point.
