  87. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

We all need a happy place, right? she wrote.

We all do, though clearly Sophie certainly didn’t find hers.

I scroll through a mix of posts in which she was tagged. Some were from friends at Starbucks. She shared images of Aubrey and Adam too. Those were heartbreaking. A life lived in the real world but now only existing online.

I note the VRBO travel website listing for “Historic Hood Canal Cabins—rent one, rent all three.” The picture shows the Wisteria, Chrysanthemum, and Lily from the beach at low tide. The crescent-shaped bulkhead is studded with oysters and barnacles. Sophie had 640 friends. I scroll down and quickly recognize Janna Fong and Helen Flynn’s pictures.

And one more.

“What’s the ASAP all about? You finally crack ten likes on a video of your cat?”

Montrose has arrived and seen me scrolling through Facebook. He’s wearing tan Dockers and a light blue long-sleeved shirt that makes him look like he should be parking cars somewhere. He smells like cigarette smoke, and I hope he’s brought his Tic Tacs.

I pass my phone to him.

“Lab called,” I say. “DNA on the Warner case matched Connor Moss.”

My partner widens his gaze. “I didn’t see that coming.”

He doesn’t surprise easily. It’s clear he’s as astonished as I am.

“Yeah, I just got off the phone with Sarah,” I tell him. “What’s more, Montrose, while I was waiting for you to get here, I went to Facebook—and get this—Connor and Sophie are friends. And Sophie posted on her wall where she was going for Memorial weekend.”

He tilts his head as he looks at the small cracked screen of my phone. “They knew each other? How’d we miss that?”

He’d missed it, but I can’t blame him. He hated social media because it was a weak area for him.

“Yeah, seems like it slipped by us,” I say. “And he would have known where she was going the weekend she was killed. I don’t know what was going on between them, but there’s something there.”

Montrose sets down my phone and slides it over to me.

“Good work, Lee.”

I smile at him as I get up.

“Honestly,” Montrose says as we walk down the hall to let our sheriff know what’s happening, “I would have bet my house on Jim Coyle being the perp.”

“Me too. Let’s get over to the prosecutor’s so we can get a judge to sign an arrest warrant.”
