- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
“You’ll be hearing from my lawyer.”
I lead her to the door. “Looking forward to it. I suppose I’ll need to make the other photos and that video of you available to the prosecutor.”
She stops in her tracks. “What video?”
I push her out the door.
“The video in which you’re sucking my cock behind the flight line at work. The company logo is right above your head.”
Her mouth hangs open, which in this instance only reminds me of the video.
Nothing comes out. Carrie is stunned. I push one more button.
“You’ll have some major explaining to do on that one,” I tell her. “You were my boss. Not cool, Carrie. You’ll probably get fired for not wearing safety glasses on the factory floor. I’m done, Carrie. So the video will be payback. You fuck with me again, and you’re done too.”
Then I slam the door. That felt great. Better than being with her on the factory floor, that’s for sure.
I go back to the bedroom and continue sorting through my old life, separating out everything having to do with my dead wife.

CHAPTER FORTY-SEVEN
KRISTEN
Marcy is late once again. My assistant will offer a pretext concerning her childcare situation, and I’ll tell her everything is fine—even when it isn’t. I have little choice. I know there is nothing worse than a female boss with a disconnect between the challenges of maintaining a career and raising a family. It isn’t easy. I know that. I wonder how I’ll manage the balance between work and home when I have a child of my own. I used to only hope or feel it would happen for me. Now I’m certain. My certainty lets me exhale for the first time in I don’t know how long.
Marcy is a whirlwind of justifications and phony good intentions when she arrives in a striking blue ensemble that she’s never worn to the office. I’m sure she expects me to remark on how pretty the outfit is, but I won’t.
“Sorry,” she offers a final time after laying out her apology, but I really haven’t paid any attention to the nuances of whatever it was that made her miss the first twenty minutes of the day. My mind is elsewhere.
“We need to get up to speed on the Barringer case,” I say.
“Right,” Marcy says, pulling out some files as she catches her breath and finds her way to a chair across from my monolithic desk. “Saw that thing on the news about the creep they think killed Sophie Warner out at Hood Canal.”
“Yes,” I say. Nothing more.
The curtness of my remark appears to trouble her. I can feel her eyes on me as I flip through the papers on my desk. The silence screams at her.
I knew it would.
