- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
“This can’t be happening,” Kristen said as we picked up Connor on an arrest warrant for Sophie’s murder. “Not my husband. Not my Connor. He’d never hurt a fly.”
She stuck with him through a process that must have been excruciatingly humiliating for an officer of the court married to an accused killer. TV, newspaper, and online coverage rained like the worst Seattle storm in history. Later, Kristen added to the case against her husband by revealing her suspicions of an affair.
“I had no idea that he was seeing Sophie Warner,” she told TV reporter Linda London in an interview that aired before his plea deal, “but now it makes sense. It’s the reason we went to the cabin. I wanted to go somewhere else, but he was so insistent. I wonder if he was planning to meet up with her.”
As I sit across from him in that chilly prison interview room, I tell him I don’t know what to say to him. “Axel Bakker saw what he saw, Connor. You can’t dismiss his eyewitness account. A woman being abducted in broad daylight while her husband and daughter were offshore crabbing.”
“I know,” he says, “but he didn’t see me. I was wiped out in our cabin. That was supposed to be us out there crabbing. We had the pots in the trunk. But I got all messed up and ruined it.” He shook his head miserably. “Not that we would’ve been able to go anyway.”
“Why’s that?”
“Found out Sunday when we tried. Turns out the crab fishery was closed until June sometime. Big notice in all the little boats that go with the cabins.”
“But Adam Warner and his little girl went crabbing,” I say.
He just shrugs. “Outlaw crabbers,” he says. “Great way to get a massive fine. They take it seriously on the Sound.”
I nod, knowing that to be true. I picture Adam ignoring the sign in the boat, loading Aubrey and the crab pots in anyway—
“I need to leave,” I tell Connor.
“Are you going to help me after all?” he asks.
“I don’t know if I can,” I say, getting up and tapping the glass for the guard.
“Thanks,” he says. “Thanks for seeing me. I want you to know that if I ever get out of here, I’m going to fight Adam Warner for custody or visitation. Aubrey’s my daughter.”
“You don’t know that for sure,” I say.
“I do,” he says. “I knew Sophie better than anyone. She lied to me when she said she thought it could be Adam’s baby. I know that beyond a shadow of a doubt. When I looked into Aubrey’s eyes, it was my own that I saw.”
