- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Everything I say now is a log on the fire. I’m going for a bonfire. I’m going for the biggest blaze I’ve ever seen.
“Connor is a murderer,” he says. “And a liar.”
“I don’t think so.” Before that moment I might have added, And I’m a pretty good judge of who is truthful and who isn’t. “I know you killed Sophie,” I say.
He looks at me like I’m crazy. But I know I’m not.
“I was in the boat,” he says. “Axel Bakker saw me. You know that, Lee.”
The eyewitness is trotted out once more. I feel so stupid about that now. Mr. Bakker saw something, all right. But not what Adam had said.
“You counted on him,” I tell him. “But Adam, I know better. I found the hat and the blood under the cabin. I know that you knew about the passageway because the night I stayed at the cabin you told me about the history.”
“Oh, Lee,” he says, moving closer. “You were drunk that night at the cabin.”
He’s a stranger. I know that now.
“I was probably drugged,” I say, holding my arm out to keep him from moving any closer. I feel my gun against my rib cage. I have seldom had the need to draw it, but now it dawns on me that it might come to that. “Did you drug me?”
He shakes his head. “I’d never do anything like that, Lee. Come on. You know me.”
I wish I did.
“I don’t, Adam,” I finally say. “I never did. Whatever you did for me when I was a kid was appreciated, but who you are today has nothing to do with who I thought you were.”
If this affects him in the least, he’s not showing it. He’s just flatly staring at me.
“Kristen’s getting a divorce,” I say.
“What’s the big deal about that?”
“You know, Adam. I know.”
“I really don’t,” he says. “Not for sure.”
I give it a go. I bluff.
“I know you’re seeing her,” I say.
“So we got a little close.”
I suck in some air. I hate confronting a liar. Like Adam.
My Adam.
“You’ve been having an affair with her all along,” I say. “Haven’t you?”
He suppresses a laugh with a tight smirk.
But I see it. I see it all.
“You couldn’t be more wrong,” Adam says.
