- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Next, I upload Carrie’s ready-to-take-flight photo and start tagging all of our mutual SkyAero friends. There’s a pretty good list of them, because the boss with the biggest office gathered his leadership team together and told them they needed to engage with our team more. He said Facebook would be a good idea. Up until now I had to scroll through my news feed to endure photo after photo of food, braggarts, and their trips to Morocco, kids that are cute only to their parents. I gave out likes like confetti in a parade because my boss’s boss said social media makes people more connected.
Now I’m giving them something they’ll never forget.
The last person I tag is Carrie. She’s about to go viral, which is a pretty good trick for someone I now consider toxic like a disease.
With almost a flourish, I post it. It feels good. Better than sex with her, that’s for sure. I sit back and drink some more and watch the fireworks.
Payback is a bitch, bitch, I think.
I hear Aubrey calling for me. I set down my drink. I bet my phone will start ringing any minute.
Holy shit, I’ll say. I knew I’d been hacked. I’m going to contact Facebook now. Carrie LaCroix? Naked? Wow, that’s embarrassing. Thanks so much. Jesus, seems like everyone is a victim of something these days.
Aubrey asks for some water, and I bring it to her. I can hear the buzzing of my phone all the way in her room. I have been through the wringer since Sophie died. Hell, I’ve been to hell and back. This bit of revenge isn’t really like me. And yet for some reason, I did save the photo. So I guess that leaves me to wonder: Is it like me after all?

ADAM
The next day, Aubrey and Katrina are at Woodland Park looking at the baby goats and lambs in the children’s zoo while I sift through more of Sophie’s things in her dresser drawers and ponder what life will be like without her. Even though I knew about her affair and, yes, hated her for it, I still had a love for her. Sometimes hurt so deep gets buried by hope. I thought, Sure, we can do this. We can make this work. I don’t want to know who he is or why you thought he was your soul mate. We all do crazy. I did Carrie LaCroix.
I find the gold-and-sapphire bracelet that I gave her for our first anniversary. She used to wear it all the time on that slender, beautiful wrist of hers. She acted like we couldn’t afford such extravagance when I gave it to her, but I dismissed that out of hand.
“I’m on the way up,” I told her. “In line for a big promotion.”
