- EPILOGUE
- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
I fill him in on Connor Moss’s DNA match and arrest in Seattle. I watch my tone. I’m elated, of course. But the man I’m calling has suffered in so many ways since everything happened. Joy and relief are not the same thing.
“I’m sorry about everything you’ve gone through since Sophie was taken, Adam. I’m sorry about all of it. I hope you and Aubrey are doing all right. I’m looking forward to seeing you later.”
I look out my window. The plum tree is fully leafed out. Its green leaves are touched with a little bronze from the heat of the summer. The tree. The branches. Adam and I will always have a bond because of the day he found me. I know now that if I transferred some feelings of affection to him, they were misplaced. I’m a Shelton girl. The Shelton boy is now in Seattle making a new life for himself.
I reach for my coffee cup.
“You hungry?”
It’s Montrose.
“Yeah,” I say, setting down the cup. “You drive.”
He nods, and we make our way to his car and drive down Fourth to a Mexican restaurant that I’ve wanted to try since it opened over Memorial weekend.
I notice his grip on the steering wheel.
“Tremor’s better,” I say.
He gives me a smile.
“Yeah,” he says. “New meds. Can’t stop the progression completely, but we’re doing our best to slow it down. How long have you known?”
“Awhile,” I say.
He doesn’t ask me not to tell anyone.
He knows he can trust me.
At the end of the day, trust is everything.

LEE
I don’t know why for sure, but I put on a new dress I bought from Anthropologie’s online store just before the Warner case. I’m no trendsetter. In Shelton, I don’t have to be. The dress is a cotton blend with a pretty, modern floral print. Not a grandma dress at all. I saw Chrissy Teigen wear something similar on Instagram. I don’t even allow myself to think that it’s a sexy choice, because that’s not the message I ever send to anyone. The truth is I seldom feel sexy. I’m not terrible to look at, but not gorgeous, either. I do the best that I can. I exercise. Eat right. My makeup is light and professional during the week. On the weekends I don’t usually wear any at all.
Today, however, I do. It’s not a celebration. Connor Moss hasn’t gone through the legal system yet. But still, I can’t help but feel that his arrest will start Adam toward healing.
He’ll get what I didn’t with Albert Hodge: justice.
