- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
I replay what I told the detectives that day and what I’m saying now. I have no reason to change my story—things happened as they happened—but somehow the pleaser in me emerges, and I find myself trying to fill any tiny gaps just to make things smoother. I’ve done that at SkyAero. Carrie asked me to run a report and then soften the figures so that she’d look like she was achieving her target. It wasn’t a big deal to lie for her. In fact, I didn’t even think of it as a lie. I felt I was only making what was supposed to happen occur at a more accelerated rate. I’m all about moving quickly to get the job done.
I can tell by the way Lee looks at me that she’s attracted to me. It might be because of what happened at the end of Tamarack Lane. Or maybe it was before that. She had a crush on me, though she was a kid, and I didn’t really see it at the time. She’s pretty enough. Nice body. I like her red hair. Not fire-engine anymore. Just nice. She’s come into her own. I like what I see, but I want to reel it back inside. Sophie’s dead. She was murdered. I don’t know why I’m thinking of other women.
Montrose pokes his head into the bathroom.
“You done?”
“Yeah,” I say. “Just washing up.”
I wonder if he’d knock on a stall door to roust me.
“Great,” he says. “We’re ready to start back up.”
The detective with the smoker’s breath reminds me of my first boss. He was such a controlling prick. Always checking up on his team members to make sure we were doing what he asked. That pretty much amounted to doing his work along with our own. Detective Montrose is probably pissed off that he’s teamed up with a younger, less experienced partner. A woman too. I bet that really frosts him. When he looks in the mirror in his run-down Shelton house, I bet he knows what every man his age knows.
He’s maxed out on where he’s going.
I go for the door. I’m looking good. I can do this. Despite some huge setbacks, and a reset button that has been inexplicably pushed on my life, I’m the opposite of Montrose and his ilk. I’m only starting over.

CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO
LEE
With Adam back in the interview room, Montrose and I have silently agreed to a cease-fire. He’s sure about Adam, whom he now considers a class-A liar. I don’t see that at all. I do know, however, that what we are about to discuss will almost certainly change one of our opinions.
