- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
“I honestly don’t think it was about anything other than forgetting for just a moment how his life had been turned upside down. We didn’t talk about what happened over Memorial Day weekend. It was just sex.”
This isn’t the Adam that I know.
Or knew.
And honestly, I don’t understand the concept of “just sex.” Just sex? Why not find another activity to pass the time? Maybe Skee-Ball or something like that.
“I’m going to be dragged into this, right?” she asks.
“Why would you be?”
“If you arrest Adam like that reporter says.”
“Do you know what happened to Sophie?” I ask.
She winces at the question. “Of course not,” she says, her voice rising a little. “And I don’t think Adam could have hurt her anyway. He’s weak, like I said.
“I wouldn’t give Linda London an interview if she asks you,” she goes on. “But if you do, I trust you won’t bring me up. I wanted to do the right thing, that’s all. In case, you know, he did it. Do you think he did?”
I offer no expression, but I give her something to think about.
“Well, there was an eyewitness that saw the abduction, Carrie.”
She gives me a little shrug and snaps her purse shut. “I heard that,” she says, “but I also heard that the guy’s about a hundred years old and isn’t sure what he saw.”
Linda and Frank are the A-Team of misinformation, I think.
“He’s sure,” I tell her. “He’s not that old, by the way. Don’t pay attention to what Linda London says, all right? She’s selling a story.”
“I guess so,” Carrie says. “I just thought I’d come forward first—you know, a preemptive strike.”
“Understood,” I say.
“I told my director this morning,” she says, getting up from the table and glancing at a text. “I think they are going to make Adam take some time off from SkyAero.”
I get up to leave. I notice that I’m shaking a little. I don’t like to shake. I push back on my own thoughts about Adam Warner and his affair with Carrie LaCroix. One bad act doesn’t always lead to another.
Not always.

CHAPTER FORTY-FIVE
ADAM
Earlier this morning I was notified by Tricia, our Human Resources representative, to come to her office at the end of the day. I asked her what it was about, and she indicated it was “process and procedure” that needed to be addressed. I thought it had something to do with changing my dependents now that Sophie was gone. I poked my head into Carrie’s office to ask what she knew, but she was on a call and waved me away.
