She refocused on her task as she spoke. “I wish you knew how many times I tried to tell you what happened that night.”
It was my turn to wince. “I don’t want to know.”
“No, I don’t mean like what happened during it, I meant before. How I couldn’t stop looking at Logan all night at dinner, how every time our eyes met I felt shaken to my core.” She sighed. “I didn’t want to like him, Olive. I would never purposefully do that to you, you know that. I simply couldn’t stop. I don’t know how to explain it. It was like he was a magnet to me, and I felt our pull instantly. I told myself all night long that I was just imagining it, and I had got up to go drive around when I ran into him in the kitchen. We talked for almost an hour before you came in there, and I don’t know, Liv. It was like love at first sight. I know you don’t understand because you’ve never had something like that happen to you but when it does…you just know.”
The recollection of that night filled me with sorrow, but the worst part was she was wrong. I did know what that was like. I did understand, because I found myself falling for a man in a matter of days and forming a connection with him over such a small period of time.
I sighed and slumped. “I’m not saying it’s okay, but I get it. I’m still pissed at you both, but not because you hooked up. But because you both knew me well enough to know I would’ve stepped aside. I would’ve never picked a man above you, Sarah.”
She nodded and tilted her chin down. “I know that now. And Olive, I’m so unbelievably sorry. It was not okay, and it never will be. But I can’t say I wish I never met him because he is everything to me. He is so funny and smart, and when he smiles his dimple—“
“You know I dated him too, right? I know all of that.” I smirked up at her.
She let out a puff of air. “Right.”
“He was my friend first, my truest friend. I guess we went into dating because it felt right, but I never had that with Logan. That passion and fire. It was more like friends with benefits than actually dating.”
Which is why I couldn’t understand why neither of them had simply talked to me and told me what was happening. That was what had me caught up for years.
