I snorted to myself at the thought. After a much-needed shower, Finn’s voice intertwined with laughter from down the hall as I got ready, and I sighed in comfort. It was funny how different things were from the last time Finn was here, from when he threatened Logan and stormed out, to now laughing and joking with my family again.

A knock came at my door, and assuming it was Taylor or Finn, I shouted, “Come in!”

With a curling iron in my hand and humming to the tune of I’ll Be Home for Christmas, I looked at the reflection of my mirror to find Sarah standing shyly at the door. I knew it would be awkward when I had to face Logan and Sarah eventually, but I wasn’t sure how uncomfortable it would be.

I quieted my hums when she stepped further into my bathroom. I sat on a small stool, the same stool I used to sit on with her when we got ready for events together.

“Hey, Liv,” she said quietly.

“Hey,” I whispered, not meeting her eyes.

“Um. Your hair is burning.” She pointed to the smoking iron.

“Crap,” I whispered and quickly freed my hair from the wand.

“Here, let me do it.” I dropped my tense shoulders and let her take over my hair. It was like high school all over again. Getting ready for double dates or trips to the mall to buy too many Bath & Body Works candles.

We sat in silence while she worked. I flickered my gaze up to her face, and for the first time since I’d been back, I noticed the changes since I saw her that day three years ago. Her hair was longer and her face a little brighter. She had small dark circles under her eyes, and her lips sat in a natural pout. She was as beautiful as everyone claimed her to be; she truly looked like an angel. And no amount of backstabbing would change that.

“Hold this.” She handed me a piece of my own long hair, and I rolled my eyes and grabbed it.

“Last time I did this your hair was a lot shorter,” she mumbled, and my lips twitched.

“That’s ‘cause last time you did this you were helping me get ready to go to orientation, and I thought getting a bob would make me look more mature.”

We snickered at the memory, and I felt lighter than I had in years. It wasn’t much, simply a sister curling another sister's hair, but it was us. It made me feel like maybe one day she would be my old Sarah again.

She sighed with a smile and let down another curl. “How did we get here, Olive?”

I answered as honestly and abruptly as I could. “You slept with my boyfriend.” It felt good to say it out loud.

She winced. “Well, I know that…I guess it was a rhetorical question.”
