Sarah came into the room, looking like an angel. She wore a flowy white dress that was about the size of my pinky, and her long brown hair was curled perfectly. Her makeup was flawless, and her long legs gobbled up the distance to reach me. Her brown eyes stayed on me with my arms open wide, ready for her. But she stopped when she saw Logan standing next to me.
“Logan, this is Sarah! Sarah, Logan.” Logan’s hand went limp in mine, his mouth opening wide.
Yes, my sister was gorgeous. She was the pretty one; always dressed impeccably and went to the gym every day. She used a shampoo that cost more than all my groceries and was known for her makeup skills. Instead of making me feel less than, or trying to dress me up, she always accepted me for who I was. I was the fun, curvy sister, and I would gladly take that role. My hips were far wider than hers, and my boobs stretched out my sweater, but if you wanted a good time, I was your girl.
I hadn’t shown Logan a picture of Sarah previously because I was a little anxious. Guys in high school befriended me simply so they could get closer to her, and I guess in the back of my mind I was fearful that Logan would do the same. So of course, he was shocked to see we had a Victoria’s Secret model look-alike in the family.
“Hi,” Logan said quietly, his voice strained.
“Hi,” Sarah whispered back, not acknowledging me.
“Um, hello?” I stepped between their staring contest and Sarah backed away.
“Hey, my sweet Olive!” She wrapped me in that familiar hug of hers. I caught a whiff of her signature apple scent and breathed in.
“I missed you so much.” I lifted my head from her shoulder.
She looked between Logan and me. “I missed you too,” she said wearily. Something was wrong, but I figured I’d ask her later.
Mom piped up from behind us. “Who’s ready to eat?”
Dinner was perfect, Logan fit in with my family like a missing puzzle piece, and it was everything I could imagine. Sarah asked him questions about his work and how he ended up at the same college as me. He seemed flustered at times, but I think he got the hang of it. Matt and Taylor exchanged looks throughout the dinner, and I wondered if they had some secret they were all hiding.
I definitely needed to ask Taylor about it later.
