  48. About Author

We skated for the hour we were allowed, and when we were done, my leg muscles were exhausted and tight. I took off my skates and pulled on my boots before joining my parents where they were seated.

“Looked like you guys had fun,” Dad said as he looked back toward Finn, who was handing our skates back to the lady behind the desk.

“Oh, yeah. It was nice.”

My siblings and their spouses joined us, and Dad clasped his hands together. “Alright. Let’s all go eat. You guys hungry?”

One thing was certain: you would never starve in the Moore house. Food was Dad’s love language. Some had words of affirmation or gift giving, but Dad had shoving well-seasoned steaks and an absurd amount of potato sides down your throat.

When we all made it to the restaurant, Finn dropped Sarah and me off at the entrance while he and Logan circled around to find parking. I pulled my jacket tighter around me so I had something to fidget with.

Sarah and I were apparently the first ones there, so we got a table for eight and sat at opposite ends. I could feel her eyes on me as I stared down at the drink menu. A Bloody Mary sounded incredible.

“Are you going to get the Bloody Mary?” She asked softly.

I shrugged. “I don’t know.”

“You used to love those.”

Well now I’m definitely not getting one.

“Yeah. I did.” I stared a hole through the menu.

“You’ve changed so much since you left. I’d really like it if we could talk. Even just for five minutes?”

How long does it take to park a car?

I nodded as an answer. It wasn’t permission to talk, but I wasn’t exactly in the mood to make a scene either. If I talked, I would undoubtedly be kicked out of the restaurant.

Sarah tapped her left hand on the table and my eyes fell to her oversized wedding ring. I had missed the wedding entirely. It was a year after she and I…argued, and I wasn’t prepared to face her or her stupid good-looking fiancé.

“So, you and Finn must be pretty serious, you know, since you’re bringing him to all this family stuff.”

I sniffed and looked to the door, hoping for an interruption of the dark-haired ski instructor. “Yeah, it’s really serious.” Seriously fake. Except for the hot make-out sessions. Those were very real.
