I dug my nails into my palms to not scream until finally Al moaned and collapsed on top of me sweaty and spent. When he drew away, hot liquid poured from between my legs. I was mortified to discover a viscous pool of blood soaking into Al’s sheets. I sat up quickly and crossed my legs, squeezing them together.
“What’s wrong?” he asked.
“I’m—”
“You okay?”
“Yeah, but…” I gestured with my eyes.
“Oh, here, use this.”
He pulled off his T-shirt and handed it to me. The middle of his chest was a valley of curly black hair which shocked me because I had thought he’d be smooth like a boy.
“I’m sorry for staining your sheets,” I said.
I wiped between my legs with the white shirt, and when Al wasn’t looking, I stuffed it under the bear.
It was dark on the drive home. Al smoked cigarettes and sang along to the music. I opened the window and focused on the taillights streaming by. I was spinning again, and my stomach churned. I leaned my head out and took big deep breaths to keep from throwing up. Finally, we pulled up to the service entrance to the hotel. Al stayed in his seat, eyes straight ahead, the motor running. I waited for him to say something.
“Okay then, so…” I prompted.
He turned. “Okay, Princess. Thanks for a great evening.” He leaned over and gave me a peck on the cheek. The kind a boy gives to his aunt or his sister.
“So, will I see you in the morning?” I asked, trying to sound casual.
“Nah, I’m off tomorrow.”
“Oh, I thought…”
His fingers tapped on the steering wheel.
“Okay, well…” My throat swelled, and tears pressed behind my eyes. He hadn’t even hugged me goodbye or given me a real kiss. I got out of the car, looking right and left to make sure I wasn’t spotted.
“You okay though, right?” he called after me.
I swallowed hard and slung my purse over my shoulder.
“Sure. I’m fine.”
I wasn’t. I didn’t know what I was, but it definitely wasn’t fine.
Still, that was all the permission he needed. Al slapped the side of the purple van twice like a jockey whipping a horse, then gunned the engine and was gone.
