- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
- ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
Gwynneth Paltrow sat in front of Brett. I hoped she hadn’t overheard.
“Besides, I am happy for you,” Brett mumbled. “Do I have to be jumping up and down twenty-four hours a day for you to think I’m happy for you?”
The supporting actress category came right after the opening number and the host’s monologue. I couldn’t concentrate. I applauded and pretended to laugh at the jokes, but inside I was festering, obsessing over how I could get Brett to see what an asshole he was being. I wished I could slip out to the ladies’ room, and slug at the pint of vodka in my satin and pearl Prada evening bag.
And I was worried about Daddy. He and Anna had dropped by the house earlier to wish me luck. The Entertainment Tonight crew was filming me as I got dressed and made-up. Daddy never went to awards ceremonies. Even when his films were nominated, he and Anna watched at home and then went to Swifty Lazar’s after-party.
“Jackie, please listen!”
Anna held the sleeve of my robe as I scurried around my bedroom followed by the makeup and camera crew. She ducked every time the lens turned her way.
“You need to talk to your daddy about seeing a doctor,” she whispered. “His pee looks funny to me. Dark. You know? Talk to him.”
“PULL THE PLUG! PULL THE GODDAMN PLUG! GO TO THE SET AND TAKE FABRINI OUT BY THE SHORT HAIRS!” My father was in the hallway screaming into the phone. A Bible epic shooting in Rome had gone over budget. I shut the door.
“Evie, lose the barrette, please,” I said to the hair woman. “Listen, Anna, I will, I promise, it’s just that now is not a great time. I’ll talk to him soon, okay?”
“When do we see you?”
“Me? You’re the one who travels half the year.” I turned back to Evie. “It clashes with the earrings.”
“Fine. If he dies—”
I pulled her away from the cameraman and the microphone hanging overhead. “Anna, I will call him tomorrow. Okay?”
“Okay, I just hope it’s not too late.”
“Jackie!” Brett hissed bringing me back to the auditorium. My face filled the giant monitors as they started the clip from the courtroom scene in First Degree. When it was over, the audience burst into applause. Suddenly, I wanted to win. I wanted my name to be in the envelope. I wanted to be the special one up at the podium crying and thanking everyone. I reached for Brett’s hand.
“And the Oscar goes to…”

DAY 51
I measure my time in seconds. Each tick of the clock like a drip of water striking the bottom of the bucket I’m soon to kick.
