- ABOUT THE AUTHOR

“Anna’s upset.”
“Anna? Why?”
“One of her friends said you rented in her neighborhood and Anna didn’t know anything about it. It was very embarrassing for her.”
Entertainment Tonight devoted segments to speculating about when and where Brett and I would marry. Astrologers were consulted on our compatibility. Psychics were questioned about our futures. Every method but police dogs were used to sniff out our intentions. And of course, the paparazzi followed us everywhere.
“Brett, Jackie, over here.” Click.
“Dollface.” Click.
“Gotcha!” Click, click, click, click, click, click.
We were photographed going to the market, the gym, the hairdresser. Every time we stepped out of our door, someone was there to record our every move.
People ran a cover of Brett and me walking on the boardwalk in Santa Monica holding hands. The picture had been taken by a paparazzo with a telephoto lens. No one seeing that cover photo, displayed at every check stand in America, could have guessed what was going on in our minds that day as we strolled along the beach path, skaters whizzing by, the sun setting over the calm sea. I was thinking up ways to improve our sex life while Brett was walking off a particularly gassy meal.
INT. ICU
LATE AFTERNOON
DAY 47
“The pneumonia produced a mass of empyema,” Dr. Foreman told Daddy and Anna as they stood next to my intubated body. Dani hovered by the door, pretending not to eavesdrop.
“Empa…” Daddy began.
“Empyema is a thick fluid, pus that develops from chest trauma or pneumonia. We performed a thoracotomy to drain the fluid but I’m sorry to say the severity has caused a partial shutdown of Jackie’s respiratory functions.” He put a hand on my father’s shoulder. “She’ll have to stay on a ventilator. Jackie can no longer breathe on her own.”
My father swayed, and Anna reached out to steady him.
Dr. Foreman continued. “She’s a strong young woman. Depending on her fortitude, she could stay like this for months, even years. That is if you choose to continue to keep her on life support.”
“Is there any chance at all she could recover?” Anna asked.
Dr. Foreman shook his head. “Not in my experience, but one can always hope,” he said somberly. “I wish I had better news.”
“Oh my God,” Daddy moaned.
“I’ll call Brett,” Anna said softly, reaching into her purse. “We need to talk this through with him.”
“Oh um, cell phones aren’t permitted here,” Dani said, coming up behind her. “If you give me his number, I can dial him for you at the nurse’s station.”
Anna raised an eyebrow. “No thank you, Dani. We will call from the car.”
