- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
- ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
I can pretend to forgive my enemies. I’m an actress after all. I can dress the part and fake my way into heaven. Or will God see right through me? Is my whole life a failure because I ran out of time before I could fix my mistakes? Hey Dr. Dave, how about a waiver for a girl with a boulder-sized chip on her shoulder? And is there a God? Because God might be nothing but a pimply-faced adolescent who tortures cats and throws guppies against the rocks to watch their guts explode. Should we forgive Hitler and rapists? How about the paparazzi or the mother who abandons her child?
Did God make me fall, or is God keeping me alive? Is God the chicken or the egg? Or both?
What comes next?
Where am I going?
What am I feeling?
“And we are back with Jean from Ohio, You’re on with Dr. Dave…”
Pierre turns off the radio and adjusts my pillows. He doesn’t look worried about where he’s going. He’s loved well and probably forgiven all the bullies who made fun of him for being gay. He sniffles as he makes a note on my chart, then loads up his supply cart, and with one last woeful glance my way rolls out the door.
SLOW DISSOLVE TO:
INT. DOROTHY CHANDLER PAVILION
NIGHT
The Oscar went to…Maggie Finch!
From that moment, Brett was like a man dancing out of a wheelchair at a tent revival. Not only was he no longer depressed, he turned into a love machine. For the first time, he couldn’t get enough of me. Breakfast in bed, make love. Candlelight dinner, make love. Again on the floor in front of the fireplace. And the sex was better. Not perfect, but often and spontaneous. Finally, my dreams were coming true, though unfortunately, not all at once. It seemed to be an either-or situation.
