ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
There are so many people who have nudged and coaxed and nurtured this book along. From the beginning: Thank you John Rechy, fabulous writer and teacher, for everything I learned at sitting around your dining table. Gratitude for my darling talented Phyllis Spiva, for your guidance and wisdom and for believing this novel would be published, even when I’d given up hope. To Rhonda Hayter, my beloved friend, brilliant editor, and writer who has helped me through more drafts than I can count. Ditto the incomparable Mary Guterson for her insightful critiques and unwavering support. Thank you always and forever, Valerie Landsburg, for holding my hand through the last round of queries, and for holding my hand through everything.
To my publisher and editor Myra Fiacco, thank you and bless you! For taking a chance on Jackie, for “getting it” for your sharp eye and excellent sentence structure, and for always pushing me farther and deeper. I have loved every single minute of our collaboration. Huge hugs coming your way post-pandemic.
I would also like to thank my fellow writers Lynn Brunelle, Warren Read, Carole Glickfeld, Danielle Durkin, and Olivia Hall for their notes and encouragement.
To the Sunday night women, the Thursday morning women, and the Saturday morning women, thank you for my sanity and serenity and for seeing me through it all.
Thank you to Lee, Joey, Belinda, Zia Phyllis, Eva, Tommy, and the rest of my warm, funny, loving, complicated, crazy, creative, impossible family of origin. For always encouraging my endeavors and for being an inspiration. This book isn’t about you so don’t worry.
To Honoré Kotler R.N. and Lisa Rose R.N., thank you for sharing your expertise with me. You are warrior women!
Thank you to anyone I’ve forgotten to thank, I’m sure it will keep me up nights and I will write you a guilt-filled email.
Thank you to my boys Desi, Oliver, Dashiell, and Tyler because being a mom is the only thing better than getting this book published!
And to my darling husband Arthur, thank you for your wisdom, your love and support; your patience; your silly dances when I take myself too seriously, and for always bringing me my morning coffee.
