Bill: Yep. [plays tape] We can see Lola early in the evening in the crew area – that’s her – if you zoom like this … you can see she looks somewhat agitated and tearful. And then later here, she’s in a service stairwell where she doesn’t have any business being, heading upwards, towards a point where she could conceivably have jumped to fall past the window where the lady in the bar thought she saw … something.
Superintendent Bailey: And did you see her redescend the same stairs?
Bill: No. I’ve been through the footage for the whole evening and the next morning, and she doesn’t come back down.
Superintendent Bailey: I see. Is there another way she could have come down from that point?
Bill: Not easily, not without climbing over railings and similar. You could do it, but it would be awkward and dangerous. I don’t see why she would.
Superintendent Bailey: Did you see anyone else behaving in an unusual way in the area in the footage?
Bill: No. There are other people up and down the stairwell all evening, most of whom have a right to be there, some who don’t but look like they’ve popped out for a smoke. We’re not allowed to smoke where passengers can see us, so the service stairs are used a lot like that.
Superintendent Bailey: So from the video evidence, which, as you say, is far from complete due to the cameras which weren’t working, it looks as though Lola went up to the upper deck but didn’t come down? Would that be correct?
Bill: It would.
Superintendent Bailey: But there is no working camera where she is believed to have jumped from?
Bill: No.
Superintendent Bailey: So therefore no way of telling if she fell from there, or, if she did, if anyone else was with her?
Bill: No.
Superintendent Bailey: OK, thank you. Is there any other footage you would like to show me today?
Bill: Yep. We do also have some footage from the bar where the woman thought she saw the person fall [shows footage] It’s not very clear, I’m afraid.
Superintendent Bailey: Can I see it again?
Bill: Yep – here you go …
Superintendent Bailey: That’s it? That white flash? That could be almost anything.
Bill: The cameras are orientated to pick up what’s going on inside the bar, not outside. So yeah, I agree, it’s not clear at all. It could be a reflection, trick of the light, or something else. I thought you’d want to see it as—
