Something catches in my throat. A memory floods my brain—Daniel in his backyard. We’re ten or eleven, spreading plastic knights and horses in an elaborate formation in preparation for a scene in one of our movies. Daniel was always so diligent, so careful. He acted like every little thing mattered, like no detail could be overlooked.
I push away the memory.
“I already told you about my girlfriend, Chloe. Everyone in Bentley knows, but if you live somewhere else, you need to be reminded that she’s missing. Even though she’s been missing for more than a week, it doesn’t seem like anyone knows anything more about where she is than they did the night of the accident. All the people I expect to know things—the police, the teachers, the principal, the parents—none of them seem to know anything about what’s going on. It seems like they know less than I do because they think I know what happened to Chloe, and they think I’m the person who killed Daniel.”
I spent most of that day in the police station, barely speaking. The lawyer Dad called showed up right when we did, and she told me to keep my mouth shut unless she said it was okay for me to speak. She spent her time arguing with Detective Haley, while I looked on like a spectator at a tennis match. I kept wanting to jump in and say, “You know as long as we’re in here arguing, there’s no one out there looking for Chloe or for the person who killed Daniel.”
But I didn’t say that.
But I’m going to now.
“I don’t know what happened to Daniel. We had an argument the night he died. But I didn’t touch him. He and I never fought like that. Not in all the years we were friends. Daniel was really one of the nicest people I’ve ever known.”
There’s a noise downstairs. Could it be Dad? If he knew I was making another video, he’d flip his shit. He keeps telling me to keep my mouth shut and put my head down. He keeps telling me to let the police do their work, even though he also spends his time bitching about every little thing the cops do.
He can’t make up his mind, either.
The house is silent again.
Was I hearing things? Either way, I need to finish.
“If you know anything about what happened to Daniel or Chloe, please call the Bentley police. Tell them anything you know, even if it seems unimportant. Chloe and Daniel…they’re two of the best people I’ve ever known. And they don’t deserve to be hurt. So please make that call. Okay?”
I turn off the camera.
Do I share on the Ex Libris channel again?
Everyone’s already seen the last one on Ex Libris…
