- About the Author
Thanks to all the publications referenced within these pages, and to those who wrote, translated, edited, published, and let me know about them. The quotes on p.16 are from Three Dialogues on Knowledge by Paul Feyerabend (Wiley-Blackwell, 1991). The quote on pp. 21–22 is from “Intuitionism in the Philosophy of Mathematics” by Rosalie Imhoff (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, fall 2020 edition). The book on p. 33 is The Guérillères by Monique Wittig, translated by David Le Vay (Picador, 1972). The book on p. 35 is Intimacy by Jean-Paul Sartre, translated by Lloyd Alexander (Avon, 1938). The book on p. 39 is A Dialogue on Love by Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick (Beacon Press, 1999). The book on p. 45 is G by John Berger (Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 1972). The book on p. 54 is Restaurant Samsara by Daniel Owen (Furniture Press, 2018). The quote on p. 62 is from the essay “Freedom” by D. W. Winnicott. The book on p. 69 is Living a Feminist Life by Sara Ahmed, narrated by Larissa Gallagher (Duke University Press, 2017). The book on pp. 75–76 is Signs Preceding the End ofthe World by Yuri Herrera, translated by Lisa Dillman (And Other Stories, 2015). The language on pp. 94–96 and 98 is adapted from the archive of the 24/7 liveblog hosted and run by the Watershed Post and staffed in part by community volunteers, including myself, to provide information to residents of Delaware County, NY, and surrounding counties affected by Tropical Cyclone Irene in August 2011. The book on pp. 102–103 is The Glass Bead Game (Magister Ludi) by Herman Hesse, translated by Richard and Clara Winston (Holt, Rinehart & Winston, 1943). The book on p. 117 is The Desert by Brandon Shimoda (The Song Cave, 2018). The language in “Aspects of Questioning” on p. 150 is taken from “Mediation Manual” (© Mediation Manual 1999 revised edition, Wing; Mediation Manual © 1991 Wing and Marden-Cruz) and used by permission. Though this language and some ideas about mediation were directly inspired by a 2016 training in mediation with a social justice perspective led by Deepika Marya and Leah Wing, interpretations of that material are my own and don’t necessarily reflect the specifics of Marya and Wing’s training. The artist’s book on p. 153 is As you sow so you reap by Lisa Anne Auerbach (Private risograph edition, 2022). An earlier version of the opening of this book was published under the title “Love, Anti- (notes toward)” online at Black Sun Lit (April 11, 2018). Thanks to Jared Daniel Fagen. The text from the “postcards” on pp. 93, 97, and 99 is taken from my poem “Draft (September 29, 2016),” which begins with a line by Simone White. “Draft” was previously published online by the Brooklyn Rail. Thanks to Simone and to Anselm Berrigan.
Coffee House Press began as a small letterpress operation in 1972 and has grown into an internationally renowned nonprofit publisher of literary fiction, essay, poetry, and other work that doesn’t fit neatly into genre categories.
