- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
- Afterword
“And there’s something more,” Elias says as I look around the big house. It’s pretty similar to my grandma’s, and at the same time, they look like they’re from different worlds. The couch isn’t that big, but at least it’s prettier than the one Elias had. The kitchen is to the left, and it’s missing a washing machine. Not a problem for me, but Enya might object. We’ll figure something out.
The wooden stairs are rounded at the edges. They creak under every step, but I seem to find something oddly pleasing about that.
I turn to face Elias and Cora, and they both have devilish smiles on their faces.
“What?” I ask and place my hands on my hips.
“Come on,” he says, beckoning me to the back door and I follow, eyeing him suspiciously.
To be honest, I’m already thinking about buying this place. The last few days were full of calls, and I hate calls. My patience is running out.
And this one here, this one has a lot of potential. Just a few little touch-ups and it’s done.
“Indigo,” Cora says, her hand on the doorknob, “meet your maybe-future garden.”
I nod, trying to put my thoughts in place, to work out if I’m ready for this. It kind of feels overwhelming, knowing that I’m one step closer to replacing my grandma’s garden with a new one. That’s not something I want.
Just as Cora goes to open the door, a loud slam makes us all look behind.
“Wait!” Olivia yells. “Wait for me,” she urges, bursting through the front door.
Elias laughs as she tries to catch her breath. She’s wearing oversized pajamas composed of one of Tom’s old T-shirts and a baggy pair of sweats.
“Fell—,” she tries and shakes her head, “asleep.”
Elias takes her in his arms, and she wraps her hands around him more tightly than I’ve ever seen before. He seems to notice too by the look on his face but says nothing. I’m sure he’ll talk to her about it.
“How do you like the house?” Liv asks, releasing herself from the hug.
I shrug. “Let the garden decide whether I like it or not.”
Liv nods and puts one of her hands on my back and the other on her brother’s, a peaceful smile on her lips.
“What’s up with you?” I whisper in her ear.
“It’s just…” I hate how she flips it away like it’s nothing. “Just love seeing the two of you together.”
I give her a look. “We’re not together. Not like that. I guess?” Don’t know what to say. Feels weird. Elias and I definitely didn’t talk about it, but we aren’t just friends either.
