  100. Afterword

“Where would all the fun be?” he laughs, looking down at her. “Won’t it feel better when you win because you worked hard for it?

“No.” She raises her brows at him. “A win is always a win, no matter what.”

We all laugh at that because she’s kind of right. That’s how things work these days. People only want the win, no matter what they have to do to get it.

We play a little more, then all start yelling when Indigo wins. I don’t know what makes me do it, but when I see her excited, her arms clearly open for a hug, I go all in. I grab her middle, raise her in the air, and spin around.

Her winning the game means Dad will finally stop praising himself. It also means she’s not as bad at everything as she is at Mortal Kombat.

I stop whirling her around, but my hands stay on her waist. Dark alluring eyes gaze up at me, blinking several times before she steps back. The all-consuming eye contact stops as she twirls a strand of hair behind her ear. That’s always a warning sign for her.

“I guess you’re too old, Tom,” Mom laughs, patting Dad on the back.

“Nah. It was pure luck.” He smiles down at Indigo, giving her a high five. “Not going to happen again.” Father points at her and she cracks a laugh.

“Yeah, only because Dad will train to get back at you,” Olivia says.

He shushes her, making those big eyes that mean don’t you dare say anything else.

“What?” Indigo mutters into her phone, shoulders tensing. We just got home after playing darts when her cell rang. “How?” Indigo’s heavy lashes fly up in shock.

She stops pacing my room and her body stiffens. She drops the phone from her ear.

I want to help, but there’s nothing I can do, especially because I don’t know what’s happening.

Indigo quickly straightens up, puts her phone in the back pocket of her jeans and rushes toward the bathroom. I sit up from the bed to stop her.

“What happened?” I say.

She sighs, her alarmed breath calming for a short moment. “They’re taking Mushroom down.”

I frown. Who in the world would do that? It’s her property. “I’ll go with you.”

She seems surprised by my offer. Her bottom lip quivers as her shaky hands grab a fistful of her hair. “What? No.”

“Yes. Let’s go.”

She doesn’t move, her eyes look blank. I grab her by the hand and open the door. Olivia is standing there, blinking. If I hadn’t been used to her nosy attitude, this would’ve scared me.

The cheeky smile that was on her face disappears when she sees our expressions.
