  100. Afterword

Livy tried to convince me to talk to Indigo. She says she feels bad, but she can’t do anything about it. How am I supposed to know what that even means? As far as I know, Indigo is twenty-one, old enough to apologize if she did something wrong.

The point is, she was just being honest, and I see nothing out of place with that. I respect it, even though I don’t know what I ever did to her.

I sit up straight, brushing the dirt off my clothes, ready to end the day. I tried to get as much work done as I could, so it’s pretty late.

Knowing full well I’m acting like a child, I call Livy on my mobile. I want her to meet me at the car, as I don’t want to bother Indigo more than necessary.

On the first attempt, I get voicemail. Same for the second. I try once more, cursing under my breath as this, too, goes unanswered.

There’s no excuse for her not answering the phone, so she’d better be dead or unconscious. It’s the only rule I begged her to follow. Always answer if I call. Nothing else.

Although Olivia is still a child, she often behaves like an adult. The idea of her growing up frightens me. Mostly because I know how much I missed parts of her childhood while I was away. For me, it feels like every month she’s celebrating another birthday. That scares me, seeing how fast she’s growing.

One of my biggest regrets is that I didn’t spend more time here. Studying and working for my dreams made me blind to what really mattered, stealing time that should’ve been for my family and girlfriend.

I guess that’s why I’m not blaming Ava. She spent half our relationship with a workaholic whose attraction to her slowly faded. We both had a hand in how it ended.

Shoving the phone into my jeans pocket, I knock on the door. The wait feels like an eternity, but I’m finally greeted by a short woman with a radiant smile.

“Good evening, I’m Elias,” I say and shake her hand, trying not to show how uncomfortable I am.

“Enya. Why don’t you come inside for a second? You must be Olivia’s brother.”

Her smile doesn’t falter as her dark eyes size me up. The black-haired woman cracks the door open just enough to allow me to squeeze through, then closes it behind me.

“She’s asleep, but I’ll wake her in a minute.”

My gaze wanders around the big room. It has a high ceiling and bright white walls. I can’t deny how beautiful it is.

“One moment.” She raises a finger, letting me know she’ll be back soon.

I stop her to ask where the bathroom is and she points down the hall.
