I couldn’t stop shifting in my seat at the long table. The white tablecloth softly brushed my thighs, and I was thankful for the coverage so no one could see my restless legs. Finn was sitting so close I could smell his cologne. His shirt was partially wrinkled where I’d fisted my hands in it earlier, and I blushed looking at the lines, remembering.

Our almost kiss earlier replayed in my mind ever since we left my room. I couldn’t erase it from my memory; it owned me. Our lips hadn’t even touched, and my knees nearly buckled. Finn’s strong hands were on my neck and my chin; he was pulling me into him, and even if I should have told him to stop, there was no way I would. I couldn’t. He was right there, and I wanted him to press his perfectly full lips on mine. But then, in a flash, we pulled away. The denied contact made my skin tight, and I was equally aroused and annoyed.

Finn sat close to me, a long menu in his big hands and his knee bouncing against the tablecloth. I looked up into his face at the same moment he turned to me. Our eyes met, and my mouth went dry. I quickly turned away, back to the conversation across the table. Dad was telling us all about the trip he and Mom went on a couple of weeks ago, but I couldn’t retain a word he said. I was focused solely on Finn’s body being right there.

“And for you, sweetie?” An elbow to my left poked me, and I looked up to see our waitress was staring at me with a notepad in her hand.

“Oh, sorry. I’ll just get whatever he got.” I cocked my head toward Finn, too wrapped up in thinking about him to count calories. The waitress took the rest of our orders and soon brought a bottle of wine to our table.

“Are you okay?” Finn leaned into me, his mouth brushing my ear.

I looked up at him and smiled. For the first time in years, I wasn’t anxious about anything. I wasn’t wondering what could go wrong or who was around me. I didn’t care about my makeup being perfect or if my hair was placed just right. For the first time since I got here, I didn’t care what Sarah was doing or if anyone in my family was watching me. I was focused solely on Finn. And judging by his soft eyes and wide smile, he felt the same. He made me feel like I was something real to him, and I soaked it up.

“Finn, tell us about some of the kids you work with,” Mom said from across the table.
