“Are you nervous? You look flushed.” He brushed the backs of his fingers across the small sliver of my warm cheek below my goggles.
“I’m not a fan of heights. Or skiing. Or any of this.” Or that you’re touching me, and my body is losing its mind.
“Well, I can’t help with the heights, but I can say you’ll enjoy skiing by the end of the day, I promise.” His grin was small and confident, and it eased my anxiety a little.
Speaking of skiing… “Mom said that Cooper was talking you up. He said you almost went pro or something?”
Finn’s smile widened and he leaned his head back. “Sounds like Coop… I mean yeah, I was serious about it for a while. I ended up tearing my ACL and was out for two seasons. It freaked me out a little to go professional, so I switched to teaching beginners and kids.” His nonchalance was admirable, as if it was only a small bump and not something so monumental it changed the entire course of his life and career.
“Wow, that’s crazy. Do you ever miss how it was before the injury?” His hand was still playing with my braid, and he was staring at it like he was trying to reconstruct how it was made.
“Nah. Everything happens for a reason. I was definitely meant to be where I’m at.” His arm left my shoulder and cold, snowy air replaced the warmth he brought me. He reached his hands up to my face and I flinched, unsure of his next move. I told him I wasn’t going to kiss him, and I meant it.
He huffed out a small laugh. “I just wanted to lift these.” His fingers rimmed the edges of my goggles. “If you were actually mine, I would want to be able to see your eyes when we’re talking.”
Something about the way he said if you were actually mine had my heart racing like I recently ran a marathon. My mouth gaped open slightly, and I mumbled something unintelligible in response.
He grinned as he loosened the strap of my goggles and pulled them away from my eyes. Surely I had a weird outline of them pressed into my skin, but he looked at me like nothing was there.
“There. Now I can see you.” I glanced away awkwardly and saw Matt and Taylor in the seat behind us, Taylor waving excitedly while Matt gave me a head nod.
