  48. About Author

When Finn and I came out of the facility and joined the rest of my family, his coworker—Cooper—was already warming everyone up. Cooper was the definition of a pretty boy. He had warm, golden hair and was nearly as tall as Finn. He had deep blue eyes and a smile that could make your knees go weak. But he wasn’t Finn.

Cooper had the whole family doing some odd stretching that involved lifting their ski poles in the air rhythmically to cheesy ‘80s music. It was like we walked right into an SNL sketch.

Finn, being the flirt he was, graciously offered to put my skis on. He grabbed my glove-covered hand and led me to a bench, where he took the sleeve of his jacket and wiped all the snow off so I could sit. I couldn’t hold back the tiny grin that spread my lips when he did, but I quickly tamped it down when I caught him looking up at me.

I sat and he grabbed one foot in his hand. “Are they looking?” He asked, his voice like rich honey. Due to my job, I listen to people talk all day long, and I could appreciate the fact that he had a great voice.

I forced myself to glance away from his deep gaze to see where my family’s eyes were. Mom and Dad were in their own world, holding hands and looking at each other like they were on their first date. Sarah and Taylor were off in their own spot stretching. Matt was talking to Logan, but his eyes were on me and Finn. I cleared my throat uncomfortably.

“Um. Kind of.”

Nerves climbed up my throat, my heart pounding like the drum at a Foo Fighters concert. My anxiety rose, climbing to a height I was scared to crash down from. This was a mistake, I thought. I can’t be here with them.

“Hey. Look at me.” Finn's soft voice drew my attention back to him, where he was kneeling in the snow with both of my feet in his hands. The tip of his nose was pink, and I knew he had to be freezing. “Just follow me, okay?” The smile he gave me wasn’t his usual flirtatious one, but careful and calm. Finn was carefree and wild, no worries in sight. He was Pocahontas, painting with the colors of the wind, but in this moment, as if he could sense I was struggling, he was a rock I could lean on.
